Fall Break

Fall Break is over, and back into the regular routine I go. I am often asked why ONU only adds an extra two days to the weekend (Monday and Tuesday) for the break and does not allow a whole week, as is given to some of my friends at various other schools, to which my response is that it provides just enough of a break to get us by until thanksgiving. As midterms near, it has reached that time in the semester where everyone starts to miss home and classes get stressful. The break allows us to get away for just long enough to feel comforted by the escape from Ada and recharge our batteries.

I live on the east coast and going home for break, especially having to be back early for practices, just seems unreasonable to me. I have stayed on every year we have had fall break. I always tell myself that I am going to be productive. That is not what happened. However, I used that time to rest and heal from minor injuries sustained from practices and games.  One highlight of my break was getting to spend time with my girlfriend and trying a new fall dessert recipe. Crust-less apple pies. I do not cook often, but I recommend this recipe to everyone. I got to do a little shopping as well. Even though I didn't leave campus to go home, getting to go do little things, that I would otherwise not have time for, was relaxing and helped me recharge mentally and come back ready for the next half of the semester. I do miss my family and friends back home, but I know I will see them soon. Now, the next challenge awaits. Winter is coming.

    It sounds like you had a great fall break! I am always a fan of new recipes, that crust-less apple pie sounds great! I agree that the Monday and Tuesday off gives us just the right amount of time! I hope you can see your family soon!

    Those extra two days do allow us to spend time catching up on homework or spend more time on the couch binge watching Netflix shows (like I did). I feel like this is the time of year where things start catching up with me such as freelance work, homework, and looking for jobs. It was really nice to be able to go home and see my family and participate in fall activities.

    It is always odd going back to school after anything like fall break. With so much time off you get out of the routine and school and homework. Also, very similar to you, it is nice to have that time to get a break from sports and then getting back to the grind.

Types of Listening

How many of you would consider yourselves a good listener? What is the difference between hearing and listening? Do you think you practice any bad listening habits? These are all questions we were asking in my interpersonal communications class when we started a new second on listening. Hearing is simply the process of sound waves hitting your eardrum, but listening is receiving and responding to the messages. when talking about listening, there is mindful and mindless. Mindful listening is paying careless attention and mindless is focusing on something else or reacting with the "okay" or "yeah" but not really knowing what is being said. End of the Road

When I first signed up for the class, it was just to get more credits and work towards a minor. I thought the class would be a breeze. In my mind, social media was a good tool to use in my field of study, but I assumed my knowledge of social media was advanced enough to where I could make it through this class without any problems. While that was not the case, I learned more than I ever thought I would about social media and how much goes into using it. I have three takeaways that I want to share from my experiences in this class. First, I can't run from the numbers anymore. I have said this before, but I was never a huge fan of analytics when I first came to college. I did well in the classes I took, but it was never a joy of mine. However, from this class I learned that it is everywhere even in social media. The longer I try to get away from it the harder time I am going to have when I must use it; so why not embrace right?
