Google+ a Distant Memory

Google+ was an attempt by the company Google to launch their own social media platform. It has long since been forgot since its launch in 2011. Google wanted to start a platform to rival those such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. While the other platforms experienced much success, Google+ remain in the background. In my Social Media Principles class, we talk about the tips our book gives to help with your google+ profile but also that it is no longer necessary. Google+ was officially shut down in April of 2019. Despite their efforts, google+ never reach a level comparable to its competition.

While Google+ never grew as popular as Instagram or Twitter, it was still a platform that caught my attention. Before I ever joined Instagram, I found myself on Google+. honestly, this program taught me a lot about the basics of social media. This was where I learned what it means to search and add or follow friends just like in on Instagram and Facebook. Google Hangouts seemed to be their version of Direct messaging. You could message anyone on your friends list, create groups, and even video with your groups. This feature assisted me in several of group projects.

My favorite feature on Google+, was the communities. The Community section worked just like a page on Facebook. Anyone could join the community and take part in group discussions, send funny content, and meet new people from across the globe. Google+ plus was the platform I used to start the blog or page idea for inspiring the youth of the nation. I saw so much negativity and not enough light shared with a lot of kids in my generation, so I set out to use this community to share some encouragement. The community I started was named "Teen Nation Inspiration." The community received a very positive response early on. We grew to over 700 members helping spread that positive message towards teens everywhere.

While it was a great joy to be a part of, this community slowly faded just as the app as many of us transitioned to the more prominent social media platforms. Google+ may no longer be active, but I still cherish all that I learned during my time using their service.

Until Next Time,
James

  1. It is fascinating how quickly social media platforms can go out of style. I remember when MySpace was an extremely popular site back when we were younger. Nowadays, you couldn't even make a profile on MySpace if you tried because of it being shut down. Also, while Facebook is still popular I feel as if the younger crowd that used to occupy it has now moved on to platforms like Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.
